DC produces a slugfest that sounds like another excuse for heroes to attack each other
After setting sales records and rebounding from an impending industry downturn in 2024, punchy DC is hoping to continue the momentum by stepping into the ring for its next big publishing event. But if they don't type those aforementioned sales figures into the text, they've failed to convince. Sorry, but this has long become way too much, and the following is quite telling where this is going:
Scott Snyder, the writer behind best-selling sensation Absolute Batman, and Joshua Williamson, who writes Superman, are the co-architects of what is being called DC K.O., the story initiative that will debut this fall and run through a main book as well as ripple out through various titles across the DC Universe.
Javi Fernández (Batman & Robin, King Spawn) will draw the main series that is being described as a slugfest to end all slugfests.
“DC K.O. is a knock-down, drag-out fight between all your favorite DC super heroes in a cosmic tournament to save the universe from Darkseid,” said Snyder in a statement.
The event builds off of the company’s DC All In era as well as its progeny, Absolute Universe. Both generated big sales and the Absolute line remains a blazing ball of sales and creative energy. Absolute Batman, written by Snyder, was the top-selling comic of 2024 and the comic is still generating six figures sales while also engendering lavish praise.
“I wanted to tell a story about Superman looking into his own heart of darkness,” said Snyder. “It’s a very personal story wrapped in nine layers of candy exploding in your face.”Wow, it's almost like Kingdom Come all over again. It's just another shoddy excuse to push darkness upon the Man of Steel, proving they vehemently refuse to jettison the bleakness obsession that's become a sad staple since Dark Knight Returns. And they even make it sound almost like a video game. Which could explain why Polygon's announcement is even more insulting to the intellect:
“Each level is a new challenge,” stated Williamson. “And the tournament will reveal unexpected heroes—some you won’t believe will go really far in the fights.”
Get over here! DC Comics is putting its heroes in a Mortal Kombat-esque tournament starting fall 2026. The publisher announced Wednesday that a new “slugfest event of the century” kicks off in October with the five-issue limited series DC K.O. Co-created by Joshua Williamson and Scott Snyder, DC K.O. pits 36 heroes a tournament with the fate of the universe on the line.Well it won't be a shock if the crossover does turn out to be jarringly violent, and dangerously close to being what Mortal Kombat was all about. If memory serves, there even was a video game starring characters from both DC and MK back in 2008 as well, prior to the equally embarrassing Injustice game. And anybody who says he's only interested in making Superman take a view that's been run into the ground before isn't improving the situation. This just makes clear why Snyder's unsuited for anything involving Superman, any more than Williamson is.
